The Beguiled – REVIEW

So yeah, I absolutely loved The Beguiled. It was another home run for Sofia Coppola. I relished how the tone fluctuated between diabolical revenge comedy and brooding Southern-pulp period thriller. It functioned as this sort of echo-chamber, feminist cautionary tale of manipulation. How the unexpected influence of sexual prowess has on the unhealthy consequent constructions of masculinity. Evidently making masculinity here feel vulnerable and femininity unshackled. The performances were also across the board strong, and I appreciated how fleshed out and distinctive each of the individual characters were. More than anything, I also found the art direction and cinematography particularly stunning. Sofia can really do no wrong, especially attempting this ambitious leap in both genre and scope.
