In a Violent Nature: Sundance 2024 Review

By Jason Osiason

In a Violent Nature delivers a chilling and transformative take on the horror genre. One defining aspect of this Canadian horror film is how it redefines the slasher genre with its unapologetically brutal narrative, primarily told from the killer’s perspective. It stands out as a grisly and deeply immersive experience, solidifying its status as a soon to be horror classic. The director’s choice to employ a bleak, retro aesthetic pays homage to the slasher classics of the 1970s and 1980s, yet maintains a timeless quality that aligns it with contemporary settings.

The plot centers around Johnny, a vengeful spirit resurrected when a locket, tied to a horrific 60-year-old crime, is removed from his resting place beneath a collapsed fire tower. As Johnny hunts down the teenagers responsible for disturbing his grave, the film delves into his tragic backstory involving a logging town and his brutal methods of vengeance.

The film’s use of silent stretches effectively builds tension, creating an atmosphere where fear is palpable. The inventive and shockingly entertaining execution of its violent scenes adds a layer of dark thrill. The narrative’s unique structure, presenting itself as a late sequel within an unseen franchise, cleverly engages with genre conventions while avoiding typical horror story arcs. There are no traditional flashbacks or grand reveals at the end, with a third-act change of pace that presents a bold contrast between the killer’s perspective and the typical final girl scenario.

In a Violent Nature feels in peak form for its artistic craftsmanship and daring approach to storytelling, which will likely endear it to fans of both classic and modern horror films. This movie is not interested in setting up a sequel but instead creatively pays homage to its influences. Its success aligns it with some of the best horror films of the past 10 years, such as It Follows, Raw, and The Witch. Boasting stunning craftsmanship and kills, it has the most effective use of fear-inducing silence I’ve ever seen. [A-]
