I Saw the TV Glow: Sundance 2024 Review

By Jason Osiason

I Saw the TV Glow marks a distinct and audacious entry in the horror genre, melding psychological intrigue with a profound exploration of identity. Directed by Jane Schoenbrun, this film presents a haunting allegory of trans identity through the lens of its protagonists, Owen played unforgettably by Justice Smith and Maddy played Brigette Lundy-Paine, who find solace and self-discovery within a mysterious late-night TV show, “The Pink Opaque”.

The narrative skillfully intertwines themes of adolescence, identity, and the haunting power of media. Owen and Maddy’s journey through the show becomes a backdrop for their personal struggles with gender identity and societal norms, amplified by the show’s eerie and cryptic nature. Schoenbrun’s direction ensures that the film maintains a delicate balance between the surreal and the painfully real, allowing the characters’ internal conflicts to resonate deeply with the audience.

Visually, the film is both striking and somber, with Schoenbrun employing a mix of vibrant and dark tones to mirror the emotional landscapes of the characters. The cinematography, alongside the eerie and unforgettable score by Alex G, enhances the film’s atmospheric tension, making it a compelling watch.

The performances are noteworthy, particularly those of Smith and Lundy-Paine. However, it is Smith who fully commits to the many layers of his character, resembling a ticking time bomb that explodes in a cathartic and emotionally overpowering and rewarding finale. Their journey is not just about finding identity but also about confronting the fears and biases of a society that often seeks to suppress uniqueness.

It is far more than just a horror film; it is a poignant commentary on the impact of media on personal identity and the struggle for authenticity in a conformist society. Schoenbrun’s film is a bold assertion of horror genre as a space for telling deeply personal and politically resonant stories and is easily one of the major highlights of this year’s Sundance. [A-]
